Manila, Philippines — This 27th July 2024 became a historical day for the Salesian Mission in Cambodia with the ordination of the first Cambodian native as a Deacon. It is Br. Johan Bosco Kong Somony, who was ordained as a Deacon by the imposition of hands of the Salesian Emeritus Archbishop of Rabaul (Papua New Guinea,) Mgr. Francesco Panfilo, SDB at the National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians, Parañaque City, Philippines. The ordination was also for Br. Francis Sau Din of Myanmar, Br. Maeko Verano Diaz of Philippines (Northern province,) and Fransisco Kherubin Nuwa of Indonesia.
Brother Johan Bosco Kong Somony grew up in the small Catholic parish of Pursat city, the largest town in Pursat province, central Cambodia. Located to the south of the iconic Cambodian Sab Lake (Tonle Sab), this region is rich in cultural heritage and natural beauty. Like many rural Cambodian youth, Somony ventured to Phnom Penh at the turn of the millennium in search of better opportunities. There, he discovered Don Bosco, a technical school dedicated to supporting young people like him.
As an automotive skills student at Don Bosco, Somony not only honed his technical abilities but also deepened his Catholic faith. The weekly oratory, a novel concept at the time in Cambodia, provided a space for spiritual growth and community engagement. Rather than pursuing a lucrative job in the Cambodian capital after completing his technical training, Somony chose a different path. He became an instructor at Don Bosco, sharing his knowledge and passion with other young learners.
Somony’s dedication and impact were evident, catching the attention of Fr. John Visser, the rector. In 2004, Fr. Visser assigned Somony to Don Bosco Poipet, situated at the Cambodian-Thai border. There, Somony continued his role as an instructor and took on leadership responsibilities within the oratory. His journey exemplifies the transformative power of education and service, bridging faith, skill development, and community building.
Brother Johan Bosco Kong Somony’s journey with Don Bosco and his deep love for Jesus led him to make an official request to join the Salesian Congregation. His sense of servitude extended beyond the congregation; he felt called to serve the Cambodian Catholic Church as well. In a historic moment, he became the first Cambodian native to profess religious vows with Don Bosco in Thailand.
The deacon ordination of Br. Johan Bosco Kong Somony shines as a beacon of hope for the Salesian Mission in Cambodia, the Cambodian Catholic Church, and the Cambodian children and youth. These communities are in great need of more pastors. A delegation from Cambodia traveled to the Philippines to accompany Br. Johan Bosco Kong Somony during this significant event. Among them were Fr. Eugene Xalxo, serving as the superior of the delegation, Fr. Roel Soto (former delegate superior and representative of the Cambodian Salesian Family), Fr. Joseph Khoa (delegate for Cambodian youth ministry), Sr. Juanita Navel, and other teachers and representatives of Cambodian youth.
Let us join in prayer for Br. Johan Bosco Kong Somony’s vocation, his unwavering commitment as an apostle for Cambodian youth, and for his dear parents in paradise who surely rejoice in Heaven at this beautiful celebration of love and unity.
