Being a Volunteer

Since 1991, the Don Bosco Foundation of Cambodia has been working with volunteers from Cambodia and abroad. It is a wonderful experience of humanity, cooperation, contribution and charity for Cambodian children and youth protected and educated by Don Bosco.

If you are interested in participating in our mission as a volunteer in Cambodia, welcome to apply. Don Bosco Cambodia Coordinator for Foreign Volunteers is Fr. Arun Michel, SDB.

You can contact him at his email: carlosmichelsdb@gmail.com
or contact WhatsApp (+855 965485841).
You can also send an email to management@donboscokhmer.org

Our Need

To make sure your volunteer service meets the requirements of the Don Bosco Cambodia Mission, the following is a list of what we really need:

  1. Education: Train our own teachers in their specific field – improving their skills, improving their teaching methods, introducing better standards and measures, strengthening their curiosity and creativity:
    – Reforestation.
    – Animal protection.
  2. Sustainability: Lead creative projects with our children and youth to explore the culture and mindset of recycling, recycling materials, plastic cutting, organic composting, etc.
  3. Vegetable garden: produce food for our children and youth in a sustainable way, teach good practices of herbal medicine production, soil nutrition, etc. Specials Meditation Center: Building natural areas for meditation, meeting and health with natural elements and recycling.
  4. Maintenance: Improving equipment maintenance and updating technology. Each section has its own workshop or laboratory. There are also solar power plants, water systems and electricity systems.

Applying through the Volunteer Association

There are two groups of volunteers:

  1. Those from the Volunteer Association that have an agreement with Don Bosco. It’s easy because a contract has already been made between Don Bosco and the association. The association sends volunteers and receives recruitment and other details.
  2. Those who come in an independent way. At Don Bosco Cambodia, we have experienced individuals who come to Don Bosco independently. Of course, it implies more work of preparation, either for volunteers or for Don Bosco, because both parts have to do the tasks that the Volunteer Association will do on a regular basis. Volunteers, for example, have to make an effort to send references to Don Bosco for their selection. In many cases, a good reference can help. Some volunteers have references from former volunteers or even organizations.

Direct application

Please request an application form from management@donboscokhmer.org and send it with the following documents:

  1. Resume: Yes, we know it does not mean anything, especially for many people who really care about humanity and not about the title. But it is also important to know something about you. It will help us to know where you will match in our education project. So send us your resume and smile.
  2. Police Records: Of course, it is annoying, especially if you are honest – but even if you had some problems with the authorities during that crazy youth. But we work with children and it is obligatory. It is now easy to get police records and make sure that long-standing issues with the authorities will not lead to any discrimination. Please note that people with child or female abuse problems cannot work in our school.
If you have difficulty providing these documents – it may happen, please contact us and we will find a way to resolve the paperwork.

What Don Bosco can offer:

  • Please note that we do not have funds for volunteers. We are not a strict volunteer association. We are an educational institution for Cambodian children and youth. It means we can not offer things like international tickets, international insurance, consular fees and so on.
  • If you are going to be a full time volunteer with us, we can provide room and board. The condition is that you will be a full-time volunteer and for at least three months. Full-time volunteers who will be with us for more than 12 months may apply to the Government of Cambodia for a Volunteer VISA. This is the duty of the government. Visa concessions to foreigners are left to the Cambodian government only. Don Bosco does not grant visas at all. Don Bosco can only make a proposal and the government decides.
  • If you are going to be a part time volunteer you can have lunch with us. But you have to find accommodation yourself.
  • Don Bosco can not be used as a means of migration to Cambodia. Volunteer in any institution, just give some English lessons while you know the country and get a real job. Those who have such a plan in mind should not apply for respect for children and youth in particular.
  • Remember, Don Bosco is a school. We are experts in the field of education. So if you apply to be an English teacher, we will expect you to be a real teacher or have some skills that will give you real authority over it. It is important that you have a good attitude in school because it is an educational area with children and young people: no smoke, no alcohol, good language, proper dress, good example is important to us.

What you need to bring

  • International travel insurance is mandatory to ensure that your insurance covers medical expenses such as hospitalization, medication, surgery, ambulance services, repatriation and so on. Don Bosco is not responsible for it.
