The Biography of Saint Dominic Savio

1 minute

Dominic Savio (Italian, April 2, 1842 – March 9, 1857) was a young student and disciple of Saint John Bosco. He first met Father Bosco in October 1854. Dominic studied with the aim of becoming a Catholic priest, but he fell seriously ill and passed away at the age of 14 due to pneumonia.

Dominic Savio’s teacher, Father John Bosco, deeply cared for and was responsible for his students. He even wrote a biography about Dominic Savio’s life. Dominic’s extraordinary journey was marked by his strong dedication to becoming a saint at a young age. He was recognized and honored as a saint for demonstrating heroic virtue in his daily life. He remains the only child saint among his peers, along with Maria Goretti and Ponticus of Lyons, who were canonized not based on martyrdom but on the purity of their lives.

He was canonized as a saint on June 12, 1954, by Pope Pius XII, making him one of the youngest canonized saints in the Catholic Church.
