Kep Provincial Administration Commemorates National Day of Remembrance

On May 20, 2025, the Kep Provincial Administration organized a ceremony for the National Day of Remembrance to honor the souls of the victims of the Khmer Rouge regime.

The ceremony took place at Kampong Tralach Pagoda, in Prey Thom commune, Kep City, Kep Province, and was held under the high patronage of His Excellency Dr. Som Piseth, Governor of the Kep Provincial Board of Governors. The event was attended by officials from various departments and institutions, members of the public, teachers, and students from Don Bosco Technical School of Kep Province.

On this occasion, His Excellency Dr. Som Piseth stated that the National Day of Remembrance on May 20 is a significant occasion held to restore the dignity and honor of the victims of the Khmer Rouge regime through psychological and social healing. Furthermore, the day serves as a message to all citizens, promoting national reconciliation and encouraging social harmony in Cambodian society.

His Excellency also called upon all Cambodian people to continue joining hands in maintaining peace and contributing to national development alongside the Royal Government, in order to further advance Cambodia’s progress.

The government issued a sub-decree on February 14, 2018, officially recognizing the National Day of Remembrance to commemorate the victims and suffering caused by the genocide committed under the Democratic Kampuchea regime, or Khmer Rouge. This dark regime plunged the country into devastation, destroying traditions, religion, currency, and families through forced labor, starvation, torture, and especially mass killings over a period of 3 years, 8 months, and 20 days (April 17, 1975 – January 6, 1979), resulting in the deaths of approximately 3 million Cambodians.
