Salesians Distribute Food to Families Amid Border Conflict in Poipet

1–2 minutes

Poipet, Cambodia – 19 December 2025
The Salesian family at Don Bosco Poipet has distributed food packets to 100 families as fighting along the Cambodia–Thailand border continues to disrupt daily life and force residents into hardship.

The distribution, carried out on Friday, prioritised families of Don Bosco students, neighbours, and those who are poor, marginalised, or living with disabilities. Many of the recipients rely on daily wages or small businesses, both of which have been severely affected by the conflict.

Salesian sisters, fathers, brothers, staff members, and the local village chief were present during the programme, underscoring a spirit of unity and shared responsibility. Organisers said the initiative aimed not only to provide material support but also to reassure families living in fear and uncertainty.

Conflict Impact

Clashes along the border have intensified since 8 December, with shelling reported almost daily in Poipet. Residents and staff at Don Bosco School say the sound of artillery has created an atmosphere of constant tension.

Food prices have risen sharply, markets have closed, and employment opportunities have declined. Several families have been displaced, while many others struggle to secure basic necessities.

The situation escalated further on 18 December when Thai F‑16 fighter jets reportedly dropped two bombs about 10 kilometres from Don Bosco Poipet. The strike damaged property and injured civilians, bringing the violence dangerously close to the school and surrounding neighbourhoods.

Salesian Response

Amid these conditions, the Salesian family has pledged to remain close to the people, especially the young and the poor. Friday’s food distribution was described as a gesture of solidarity and hope, reminding families that they are not alone during the crisis.

Salesian houses across Cambodia are also preparing fundraising initiatives to support displaced families of students from Poipet and other affected provinces.
